Re: Book In-Progress: Lessons in Law and Life from Harry Potter's Adventures, for Fans of All Ages;
Authors: Karen Morris, Esq. and Bradley S. Carroll, Esq.
The huge number of Harry Potter fans have demonstrated an insatiable appetite for books and movies about the boy's adventures. Excitement about J. K. Rowling’s new Harry Potter book, to be released this Saturday at 12:01 a.m., is at fever pitch. The fifth movie in the series, released only days ago, has already set box-office records.
Two experienced lawyers and Harry Potter enthusiasts, who are interested in teaching the law in a fun and exciting way, are writing a book that explores the abundant legal issues embedded in the incredibly popular series
Many of the books' twists and turns incorporate J.K. Rowling's apparent fascination with the law. Consider, for example, the enchanted flying car or the deliciously conniving newspaper reporter for The Daily Prophet. They provide the foundation for lessons about the crime of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and the tort of defamation. Our book will identify in an entertaining and informative way the events in the stories that implicate the law, then explain the law in an easy-to-understand manner, and discuss the application to our legal system and society.
Additional features of the book include "Lessons in Life," "You Be the Legislator," and exploration of legal careers. “Lessons in Life” extracts from Harry's adventures rules of morality, law and ethics. “You Be the Legislator” invites the reader to make informed assessments of existing laws and conjure modifications that might better suit our world. Paralleling Harry and his friends' focus on career options, the last chapter will contain information about occupations in law.
Karen Morris is a Professor of Law, Brighton Town Judge, and an author of several textbooks. Bradley S. Carroll, an attorney with the law firm of Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix, Arizona, is a former administrative law judge and has been practicing for
more than 20 years.
They will be presenting a workshop on “Harry Potter and the Law” at an academic symposium on the Harry Potter phenomenon. The symposium is titled “Prophecy 2007” and will take place in August in Toronto, Canada.
Anticipated completion date for the book is August, 2007.
